Colorado Avalanche @ Buffalo Sabres Hockey Game

I hadn’t been to a hockey game since April 2017, and then suddenly I’ve found myself going to three in three consecutive months and another one coming up this Monday. I’m not complaining though as I love the atmosphere of being in an arena watching live hockey and cheering on my favorite teams.

In my last hockey blog I mentioned how I overpaid for tickets to this game, and that for less money I could have had a better view of Colorado Avalanche's forward Nathan MacKinnon. Well I would of had to catch a flight to Colorado if I wanted a view of him because he wasn’t even there that night! That’s right…overpaid and no MacKinnon due to the upper body injury he unfortunately got a few weeks earlier playing a game against the Vancouver Canucks.

The weather also called for freezing rain that night, but despite this obstacle my best friend Jess and I made it to the game. We left Canada early so we wouldn’t have to rush to the game, but with the poor weather there was no traffic at the border. We ate dinner at The Creek, which is a small restaurant inside the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino. We split the chips & dips ($8 USD) and I ordered the beef on weck with steak fries ($12 USD).

A weeeee bit salty.

For information about parking and other food options for your visit to see the Buffalo Sabres play at the KeyBank Center you can read my previous blogs when I saw the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Dallas Stars play there.

I follow the popular Instagram account @hunksofhockey for their posts of hot hockey players and the humorous captions that go along with them. They’ve recently set up an Etsy shop with multiple items for sale such as tank tops, t-shirts and phone cases that display their username and slogans used in their posts.

I purchased a toque ($20 USD) and mug ($14 USD) from the site that I’m very happy with, as they were both great quality products. Here I am wearing the toque:

We arrived to the arena with about 15 minutes before the warm up skate (my fave part). I swear in every single warm up skate picture I’ve seen on the Colorado Avalanche Instagram account captain Gabriel Landeskog isn’t wearing a helmet. Guess who was wearing a helmet the whole warm up in Buffalo? Landeskog.

This was honestly one of the best live games I’ve seen in awhile. I didn’t think it was going to be a great game when it started off with Colorado’s Colin Wilson scoring a goal 43 seconds into the first period.

The second period started out 2-1 Colorado, then 3-1, but then Buffalo came back and it was 3-2 where it stayed for the rest of the period. When it became 5-2 Colorado in the third I didn’t have much faith in the Sabres, but they ended up getting 2 more with about 3 minutes left to go.

Colorado had a lot of power play goals and a breakaway goal. Buffalo even had a shorthanded goal. The scoring was very back and forth throughout the night and both teams played well with Colorado winning 5-4 in regulation.

At one point during the game Landeskog’s helmet did pop off though and I got to see his glorious flow.

After the game we walked back to the casino as we always do to redeem our $10 in free slot/table game play as part of their Free Play Ticket Exchange. I ended up winning $10 on video blackjack!

As I type this post it was announced on Colorado Avalanche’s  Instagram page that MacKinnon will be returning to the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.  I really hope they make the playoffs this year so I can continue to watch the team play for the Stanley Cup.
